Malabar Hill Forest Trail

IMK Architects Leverage Vectorworks for Sustainable Urban Eco-Design

Executive Summary

The Malabar Hill Forest Trail, designed by IMK Architects in Mumbai, India, is a pioneering urban eco-tourism initiative. Spanning 482meters through one of Mumbai’s last remaining natural urban forests, the project demonstrates how sensitive design choices and advanced digital tools can create public infrastructure that preserves, rather than disturbs, the environment. IMK Architects relied on Vectorworks to bring their vision to life, using the software’s Design & Documentation capabilities to ensure accuracy, sustainability, and seamless collaboration throughout the process.

Project Background

  • Project Name: Malabar Hill Forest Trail
  • Location: Malabar Hill, Mumbai, India
  • Length: 482 meters
  • Client: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)
  • Architect: IMK Architects
  • Completion: March 2025
  • Collaborators: Nepeansea Road Citizens’ Forum, JSW Foundation

The Malabar Hill Forest Trail was conceived to offer Mumbai residents a safe, immersive experience within a 12-acre micro forest, while prioritizing ecological preservation. The elevated walkway allows visitors to traverse the forest canopy with minimal impact on the ground, protecting both flora and fauna.

Design Challenge

IMK Architects faced several key challenges:

  • Ecological Sensitivity: Avoid disturbing the forest floor and existing root systems.
  • Terrain Complexity: Design a structure that adapts to steep slopes and variable elevations (2-10 meters above ground).
  • Minimal Visual Impact: Blend the walkway into the forest environment using local materials and subtle lighting.
  • Public Accessibility: Integrate amenities and access points without compromising the ecosystem

Why Vectorworks?

IMK Architects selected Vectorworks for its Design, Documentation features, which were essential for:

  • Site Analysis: Accurately modeling the complex topography and vegetation.
  • Design Iteration: Quickly testing multiple design options for minimal environmental impact.
  • Structural Coordination: Integrating steel and timber elements with precise placement to avoid tree roots.
  • Visualization: Producing detailed, illustrative drawings to communicate design intent to stakeholders and the public.

Implementation: Vectorworks in Action

1. Site Modeling and Analysis

Vectorworks enabled the team to create a detailed digital terrain model, mapping every slope, tree, and natural feature. The software’s site modifier tools allowed for accurate grading and cut/fill calculations, ensuring that the walkway’s supports could be placed with minimal disturbance.

2. Design Development and Detailing

The architects used Vectorworks to develop the raised walkway’s steel and timber structure, adjusting elevations and spans in response to the terrain.

3. Collaboration and Documentation

The project required coordination with structural engineers and municipal authorities. Vectorworks enabled seamless sharing of models and drawings, streamlining the approval process and reducing errors.

Results & Impact

  • Zero Tree Removal: The walkway was constructed without damaging a single tree, preserving the forest’s biodiversity
  • Minimal Ground Disturbance: Low-impact pile foundations and elevated design protected root systems and natural water flow.
  • Enhanced Public Access: The trail now offers a safe, educational, and recreational experience for Mumbai residents, setting a precedent for urban green infrastructure.
  • Efficient Workflow: Vectorworks reduced the need for multiple software platforms, enabling a fluid design process from concept to construction documentation

Client Testimonial

“Vectorworks was instrumental in helping us realize a vision that demanded both ecological sensitivity and design precision. It allowed us to model, iterate, and communicate our ideas effectively, ensuring the walkway truly respects and enhances its natural setting.”

  • Rahul Kadri, Partner & Principal Architect, IMK Architects

Conclusion

The Malabar Hill Forest Trail exemplifies how advanced design software like Vectorworks empowers architects to deliver projects that are both innovative and environmentally responsible. By leveraging Vectorworks’ comprehensive toolset, IMK Architects set a new benchmark for urban ecological design in India.
